City of Darlington (United Kingdom)

Situated in the north east of England Darlington has a population of 100,000 inhabitants. The city is well known for the world’s first passenger steam railway opened in 1825. Since then Darlington became an important centre for railway manufacturing.

Recently Darlington has gained a national reputation for piloting the delivery of a package of transport measures aimed at encouraging higher levels of walking, cycling and public transport use. Given the name ‘Local Motion’ Darlington’s programme has included personal travel marketing aimed at more than 40,000 residents, plus information and motivational campaigns encouraging people to reduce car use in favour of using sustainable travel.

Using experience gained from Local Motion, Darlington is able to contribute specific travel marketing expertise to the BAPTS partnership with respect to the activity field of Marketing and Mobility Awareness.
